The innovation at the Book Biannual Event of 2005, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was the Collection of Books, "Here Comes Monica's Gang," in Braille, launched by Editora Globo.
The collection will allow blind and visually impaired children to get to know the wonderful universe created by Mauricio de Sousa.
Two of a series of 20 books in Braille have been launched: Hi, "I'm Monica," and "Hi, I'm Jimmy Five."
Yara Maura, the writer of the books, introduces the main characters of Monica's Gang, sharing what they like to do most, their tricks, games and their friends in fun, short verses.
Other distinctive features in the books in Braille:
The illustrations were made with raised dots, so children will be able to identify the characters by touch. And the use of big fonts and primary colors to reach visually impaired children who need special resources for reading.
Everything was made with the support of Dorina Novill Foundation for Blind People and with the help of a team of visually impaired consultants to assure the illustrations and the text were properly adapted.
According to the editor, "The characters and stories by Mauricio de Sousa are ideal tools to promote social inclusion."
Several months ago, Mauricio created a new character - Doreen, a blind girl, who has joined Monica's Gang.
In his comics, Mauricio de Sousa shows that children with disabilities should have full childhood. And now, these children can also have fun with Monica, Maggy, Jimmy Five, Smudge Doreen and the whole gang.
