The Brazilian postal service and Mauricio de Sousa launch a series of 40 official postage stamps featuring the Monica's Gang characters playing the sports included in the 2000 Olympic Games.
This is the fourth time the Monica's Gang characters have appeared on Brazilian stamps. The themes of the three previous series were protection of the environment, commemoration of the first stamp issued in Brazil, and the UNICEF Declaration of Children's Rights.
The popularity of Mauricio de Sousa's charismatic cartoon characters makes these special stamp issues much-sought collectors' items.
